LLLT for Muscle Pain   by Ryan Frank

Low level laser therapy studies began in 1967 when Endre Mester examined the results of laser light on skin cancer at the Semmelweis University, the oldest and most influential medical school in Hungary. Mester began the studies so that other intellectuals and medical specialists could expand on the clinical benefits of low level laser treatment, or LLLT. For several decades, medical experts were still viewing low level lasers as "experimental" treatments.

LLLT works by having red and near infra-red light glide over injuries to improve wound healing and give reinforcement to acute and chronic pain. In recent years, LLLT has been broadly accepted in the medical world as a way of treating muscle pain. Many of those who endure steady and chronic muscle pain will often take handfuls of pain killers to ease their hurting, go to a massage therapist to release the soreness, or even make an appointment with their general practitioner to educate themselves about ways to soothe their tenderness.

Here are some ways that low level laser treatments are aiding in muscle pain.

  • Clinical trials are presently underway to help out those who suffer from Carpal Tunnel syndrome by applying low level lasers to the wrist area. The trial is still pending implementation and many medical professionals are hoping that low level lasers will alleviate pain for the millions of people who are diagnosed with this disorder.
  • Lower Back pain is a widespread complaint that many individuals suffer from and LLLT assists in treating this pain. Chiropractors use LLLT as a complement to their treatments for Lower Back pain.
  • Neck and shoulder pain is a general muscle ailment that many people have to deal with everyday. Low level laser companies have undergone trials and have concluded that LLLT results have proven to promote pain reduction and have provided an increase in muscle strength and scale of motion for patients with persistent pain due to conditions of muscle spasms, osteoarthritis, cervical or thoracic spine strain.
  • Muscle pain is also connected to liposuction and those who go through surgery will often protest about the pain up to many weeks after the procedure. Low level laser therapy as a compliment in the operating room to help in the decrease of pain linked with surgeries, such as liposuction, and also advances nerve regeneration following the procedure.
